Disney’s ‘A Christmas Carol,’ A Review

I remember the first time I saw Jim Carrey on screen: I was about ten years old, and the movie was “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.” And I remember looking up at that big screen, watching Jim Carrey use his own anus as a hand puppet, and thinking to myself, “That guy would make a great [...]

Conspiracy Theory: Was Walt Disney Frozen?

Conspiracy Theory: Was Walt Disney Frozen?

Was Walt Disney cryogenically frozen? This is one of the more bizarre Disney conspiracy theories, but nevertheless remains very popular. Basically the theory proposes that Walt Disney arranged to have himself cryogenically frozen at the time of his death, in order that future science could someday use space age technology to reanimate him. But could it [...]

10 Reasons Why Kim Kardashian Will Never be a Disney Princess

Professional socialite Kim Kardashian turned heads over the weekend by wearing not one, but TWO Halloween costumes modeled after Disney princesses (in various states of undress). Kardashian took the streets as both Princess Jasmine and Snow White (not at the same time; that would be impressive), and the blogs and celebnews sites have been abuzz [...]

The 10 Most Messed Up Disney Villains

The 10 Most Messed Up Disney Villains

Today's children are sensitive. They must be disciplined by means of positive affirmation, protected with SPF 500 sunblock and shielded from portrayals of films that are too scary. But this was not always true. There was a time when Disney villains were actually quite evil, some even psychopathic. Here's a look back at a time when villains were allowed to be villains:

No, Miley Cyrus is Not Dead

miley4

The Internet is abuzz with rumors about the sad, untimely fate of Disney celebrity and pop superstar Miley Cyrus, star of Hannah Montana and icon to so many tween girls.

But the thing is…she’s not actually dead. Everyone can take a deep breath and rest easy, because there is no validity to the bizarre and seemingly random rumor. Miley is on tour and as healthy as an ox. These types of rumors tend to make their way across the Internet from time to time…celebrities once rumored to be dead include Sinbad, Natalie Portman and Steve from Blues Clues. It’s hard to say how these rumors get started, but it’s worth nothing that according to some sources including Examiner.com, Miley actually was in a car accident a few days ago, but was uninjured. That may be the source of the rumor.

So don’t believe everything you hear. Miley is fine, Walt Disney did not freeze his head, and Buzz Lightyear is still just a toy (not a real star commander).

Miley Cyrus Says She’s Not Good at the Whole ‘Dating’ Thing

mileyc

Miley Cyrus…you know she’s very talented when it comes to singing, acting and juggling two identities, but what about dating?

Apparently not so much. Miley told ContactMusic that dating is not exactly her forte. “Oh, I’m not really good at dating,” she said. “The whole game often ends with a broken heart. And I really know how much a broken heart hurts. I wouldn’t do that to anyone.”

She went on to say, “It’s frustrating. Whenever I want to be alone with a boy the paparazzi follow us. Sometimes I would like to wear a wig – like Hannah Montana. Then I’d have a more private life for sure.

So who is Miley dating now? She insists that “there’s no dude” and that she doesn’t have time for a serious relationship, but she has recently been romantically linked with 19-year-old actor Liam Hemsworth. Previously she dated model Justin Gatson and singer/actor Nick Jonas, of Jonas Brothers fame.

Tips for Avoiding Swine Flu at Disney World

lilostitch

As I reported earlier, many people are worried about the spread of Swine Flu–also known as the dreaded H1N1 virus, which oddly sounds much scarier–in large, crowded places like Disney World. To combat this problem, Disney has just installed hand sanitizers across the park, this according to the Orlando Sentinel.

But combating a dangerous, fast-spreading and highly-contagious ailment like swine flu will take more than an occsaional squeeze from a hand sanitizer tube. Here are some tips for staying healthy at the Magic Kingdom.

1) Try to acquire a powerful stomach flu before arriving. Your constant, explosive vomiting will make other park visitors eager to stay far away from you, thus giving you less exposure to their swine flu.

2) Ride the Peter Pan ride over and over until you breathe in enough pixie dust to protect you from swine flu, tuberculosis, gun shot wounds and anything else that may come your way while enjoying the Magic Kingdom.

3) Try to find the Big Bad Wolf and stick close to him. The Big Bad Wolf knows a thing or two about dealing with swine.

4) Children are the most likely to spread airborne illness, so make yourself a human child repellent. Perhaps a nice t-shirt that says “I Killed Mickey” or “Fun Police.”

5) Arrive at a time when the park is less crowded, such as 3am. This may require the use of a jet pack or a grappling hook.

6) Try to find the genie from Aladdin, and wish for everyone else in the park to have explosive diarrhea. They’ll spend so much time in the restroom, you will be completely undisturbed by their viruses.

7) If a witch offers you a poisoned apple, eat it! Swine flu will be the least of your problems.

Demi Lovato Appears in ‘Got Milk’ Campaign

demigotmilk

What do Miley Cyrus, Yasmine Bleeth and Austin Powers have in common? Well, besides the fact that they all enjoy exposing themselves, they have all appeared in ‘Got Milk’ ads. And now, Demi Lovato is joining the ranks as well (but hopefully she doesn’t enjoy exposing herself quite so much as the other examples).

Demi recently shot her ‘Got Milk’ ad to encourage the consumption of milk as a healthy and nutritious part of a balanced diet (oh God, I sound like a cereal commercial). Says Demi, “On stage I get my energy from my fans. Off stage I dive into a glass of lowfat milk. The protein and other nutrients keep me rocking. Here we go again!”

Demi’s appearance in the ad is part of the ‘Body by Milk’ campaign, which specifically encourages young people to consume the popular beverage. The ‘Got Milk’ campaign is not without its controversy however. Animal rights groups like PETA and the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine have criticized the ads for misleading the public, arguing that dairy products are detrimental to people’s health.

Still, you have to love Demi Lovato crowd-surfing with a milk moustache. It sure is better than having to watch that White Gold clown.

Overseas, Disney’s ‘A Christmas Carol’ is No Match for ‘This is It’

michaeljackson

Although Disney’s ‘A Christmas Carol’ proved to be a #1 hit in America last weekend, beating out the popular Michael Jackson concert film ‘This is It’ with a $31 million opening, the story overseas is quite different.

Variety reports that ‘This is It’ has remained the #1 film in the international market, and that Jim Carrey’s new 3D Scrooge story only grossed $12 million in 18 territories. By contrast, ‘This Is It’ brought in $29.5 million from 8,623 screens in 110 markets, bringing it to a worldwide total of $186.2 million.

‘A Christmas Carol’ has brought in disappointing numbers across the board for Disney, with less-than-projected sales even in America. Still, Disney execs are confident that the film will make up loss revenue by continuing to pick up steam as the holiday season approaches, much like ‘The Polar Express’ did back in 2004.

But with James Cameron’s highly-anticipated ‘Avatar’ coming to 3D screens in time for Christmas, theaters may have to push 3D-showing of ‘A Christmas Carol’ aside to make room.

Disney’s First Black Princess: Kids Say ‘So What?’

tiana

There’s a fascinating new article by the Associated Press that examines the significance of Princess Tiana, Disney’s first black Princess in The Princess and the Frog, and how parents and children tend to view said character differently.

To parents, Princess Tiana represents an important cultural and historical milestone: an African American Disney princess from New Orleans, surrounded by black culture and celebrated as someone who will forever join the revered ranks of Snow White and Cinderella in Disney princess lore. Children too are excited about the new princess, but they may not see the same level of cultural significance.

“[My daughter] understands that this is a princess who is African American,” said Holly Price Halford, an African American mother living in Virginia, to the Associated Press. “But do I think it’s a big deal to her? No.”

Another African American mother, Erica Branch-Ridley of New Jersey, told the AP that her 7- and 11-year-old daughters are excited about a new Disney princess, but that the younger one doesn’t really understand the importance. “She sees Obama, the first girls, she’s like, ‘that’s nice.’”

So what does this mean? One could make the argument that African American children are failing to learn the true significance of their history, and thus taking milestones for granted, but an argument could also be made that children are seeing less importance because America is finally starting  to become a more accepting and colorblind society. Perhaps some combination of the two.

What do you think?

See Demi Lovato’s ‘Remember December’ Video!

Well kids, it’s finally here. Ms. Lovato has been tweeting about the video for weeks, sharing her excitement about the recording process, and Disney has teased fans with five-second clips revealing only tiny snippets of the wonder that is ‘Remember December.’ And now, finally, you can see the video for yourself in its entirety.

There’s no denying that the new Demi Lovato video is a complete visual spectacle, with some incredible art direction and breathtaking scenery. Plus, Demi herself is very beautiful to look at, and it’s just a ridiculously catchy song, with a powerfully infectious rock chorus and some awesome 80’s-reminiscent synth work (I dare you not to dance). So all around, I would say that this was absolutely worth the wait.

So watch the video for yourself and feel free to share your thoughts.
