Jennifer Stone, known best as Selena Gomez’s perky best friend Harper on Disney’s hit show ‘Wizards of Waverly Place,’ has a brand new role to look forward to. Variety reports that Jennifer will star as the title character in ‘Harriet the Spy,’ an upcoming Disney Channel original movie based on the popular children’s book by Louise Fitzhugh.

As you may remember, ‘Harriet’ was made into a film once before, back in 1996, starring Michelle Trachtenberg and Danny DeVito. Now the beloved story is getting a new treatment, and will air sometime in 2010. According to Variety, the updated retelling casts Harriet as a movie producer’s daughter determined to become the class blogger by dishing on the star of one of her father’s films.

“Jennifer Stone is a great talent for our network,” said Disney Channel programming head David Levine. “We know kids love to see series stars in movies.”
